Food Wrapping

Food wrapping for homemade lunches and food storage use a lot of plastic. Bees wrap is a brilliant alternative to cling film or foil. Although many people believe that aluminium foil is a better alternative to cling film, it is in fact much worse, using lots more energy and fossil fuels to produce, and taking a long time to break down if it isn't recycled (which it rarely is).

The best way to combat waste when wrapping food is with bees wax wraps. These are now all over the market as they are gaining in popularity. The beeswax and jojoba oil that they are usually made from is also antibacterial in nature so they are great for keeping your food a little longer too! These are particularly great for wrapping sandwiches, but can also be used to cover plates and bowls, and anything else you would use cling film for! At the end of their lives (usually after around a year), you can just cut them up and add to your compost heap! These can be ordered from many plastic-free shops online,

Another great alternative is silicone zip-lock bags. Although silicone is not necessarily a natural product, it is very long-lasting a durable! These can be frozen, microwaved, used in boiling water and put in the dishwasher! They are also great for storing liquids and for taking food out an about. You can also buy silicone covers to go over bowls and glasses and keep your food fresh.

For storing/freezing leftovers and taking pack lunches with you, don't be afraid to keep reusing the plastic tupperware or ex-takeaway containers you already use, they always come in handy! If you want a sturdier lunchbox, consider a stainless steel one, as this can be recycled when you no longer can/want to use it.
